We all have our favorite eBay stores and sellers, but what makes us prize them so much? While price, customer service and product quality immediately come to mind; a reason easily overlooked is the uniqueness or rarity of the merchandise that is being sold.

As an eBay seller, you are probably already aware of the ‘Weird Stuff’ sub-category listed under ‘Everything Else.’ What you may not know is that sellers may be able to utilize this division of eBay to springboard their regular auctions. Imagine hosting a sale in this category as a kind of ‘Late Night with David Letterman’ guest spot for your upcoming movie.

Some of the most peculiar, or weird, eBay auctions have included a cooked but uneaten brussel sprout, a grilled cheese sandwich in the shape of the Virgin Mary, and a group of Australian men promising to spend a weekend of “beers, snacks, good conversation and a hell of a lot of laughs.” Honestly, the more over the top the sale, the better the likelihood of buyers stumbling onto your auction. Nonetheless, you should not rely on creativity alone to drive hits.

There are thousands of ‘Weird Stuff’ auctions every day, so it is important to make sure your advertisements stand out from the rest. For a fee of twenty dollars your auction will be featured on the site for seven to ten days. This isn’t much considering the amount of eyes your sales will win.

The objective of auctioning in the ‘Weird Stuff’ section should not be to make profit, but instead to drive the traffic to your regular auctions. Get seen, and develop an eBay presence that draws people to your sales.
